Gleison Tibau (19-6) is under an intense pace of preparation for his upcoming fight versus Josh Neer at UFC 104, on October 24th. And Tibau believes the conditioning aspect of the training will make the difference to his victory.
“I’m training too hard. I’ve been stressing the physical part which will probably be decisive because I’m training more than my adversary. The strategy is to overwhelm him” said the UFC lightweight fighter to Brasil Combate’s Vitor Targueta. The American Top Team prospect seeks to rebound from the loss to Melvin Guillard as the result of his latest performance has created lots of discussion because of the controversial result in favor of the American fighter.
“I can’t understand that outcome still today. All the media pointed me out as the winner, the audience and even Melvin apologized to me after the fight. I fight for the UFC to get the title, so if Guillard comes up again on my way it will be a good opportunity to change that result. The best option is to submit or knock him out to avoid the judge’s decision. I don’t trust them anymore”.
Tibau is known as the athlete who puts on more weight from the weigh-in until the fight than most fighters. It’s surprising to hear from him how much he weighs at fight time, since he fights at the lightweight class. “Yes, it’s true. They already talked about putting it in the Guinness Book” said a smiling Tibau. “I generally walk around at 84Kg” (185Lbs).
Recently, Thiago Silva – ATT teammate – affirmed it is unnecessary and harmful to engage in the process of losing and gaining so much weight before the fights. Gleison said the bottom line is that he fights stronger than the opponent. “Each athlete has his own way to prepare for the fight. I respect all opinions. But in my case, it’s a natural work and I feel OK to dehydrate and recover later on. The most difficult part is the sacrifice of losing weight because the liquids of the body are scarce. On the other hand the benefits are uncountable because I come to fight stronger than the enemy”.
