GTA IV Sets Guiness world Records...Score one for the Gamers
Guinness World Records has announced that Grand Theft Auto IV has destroyed the competition by selling 3.6 million units and earning $310 million on its first day of release.
This feat has earned the game Guinness World Records for the Highest Grossing Video Game in 24 Hours and the Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours. GTA 4 has become the most profitable entertainment release of all-time, surpassing other video game, film and book releases.
Xbox 360 First to Reach Ten Million Console Sales in U.S.
Microsoft Corp. today announced that Xbox 360® has sold over ten million units in the United States, making it the first current generation gaming console to break the ten million mark in the U.S., and contributing to global sales of over 19 million.
"This year will be the largest in the history of the videogame industry, with Xbox 360 leading the charge in the U.S. and abroad," said Don Mattrick, senior Vice President of the Interactive Entertainment Business in the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. "History has shown us that the first company to reach ten million in console sales wins the generation battle. We are uniquely positioned to set a new benchmark for the industry."
THQ Gives Update on UFC 2009 and Possible Release Date
The highly anticipated UFC video game that has a current working title of “UFC 2009” finally has a general release date. The gaming giant THQ has set an initial launch date of Spring 2009 for at least the XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 game consoles.
“UFC 2009” was originally announced back in July 2007, but there hadn’t been very many details since then. It was also mentioned that sometime during the UFC 84 Pay-Per-View broadcast that there would be some sort of announcement regarding the game, and we think that this was that announcement.
If you haven’t already seen the trailer for this UFC game, please make sure you check it out because it looks absolutely beautiful and we hope that the game play matches the graphics.
Here’s what Gamespot had to say about the upcoming UFC game:
That isn’t the only fight [WWE Legends of WrestleMania] for which THQ is spoiling, the publisher also addressed today the Ultimate Fighting Championship game, which has kept an exceptionally low profile since the 2007 E3 Media and Business Summit. That project will now see release in spring of 2009, and like Legends of Wrestlemania, its release will be tied to one of the UFC’s major events. GTA 4 Deals: An upcoming Circuit City circular for the week of Grand Theft Auto IV’s release (April 27 through May 3) features plenty of deals for gamers. Circuit City will be offering a free $10 gift card with the purchase of any version of Grand Theft Auto IV.
The retailer will also be offering a free second wireless controller and free Gamers Savings Club Membership with the purchase of any Xbox 360 system and any Xbox 360 version of GTA IV.
Both Circuit City and Target are also advertising “limited quantities” of the Nintendo Wii to be available the same week. With no rain checks and limit one per household, a minimum of 15 will be sold per store and vouchers handed out one hour prior to store opening. Here it is, folks. Best Buy's (and probably Microsoft's) Grand Theft Auto IV savings kamehameha. Buy GTA IV along any version of the Xbox 360, and get a $50 gift card as a sweet bonus. If you've been one of those woulda, coulda, shoulda gamers still holding out on this generation of systems, it's probably not a bad time to make the leap. April Game Release Dates: PS3:

A few of those magnanimous folks were kind enough to share their impressions of GI's Gears 2 cover story on the NeoGaf forums today, and we dutifully formed our impressions of their impressions, which we shall impress upon you here.
According to the article, the basic gameplay of Gears will return in the sequel. The familiar sticky cover system will be back but slightly tweaked to make it harder to hit characters hiding behind stone walls, barricades or whatever else litters the battlefield.
Many of the first game's weapons will return, and active reloads will be back with minor (undisclosed) alterations. As many Gears watchers predicted, chainsaw duels will now be part of the experience, and a smattering of new weapons will be included, too. The article specifically mentions poison grenades (oh, the multiplayer possibilities) and something called a Gorgon burst pistol. If it's anywhere near as sweet as the Boltok pistol from the first game, we'll take three.
Much of the piece focuses on Gears of War 2's technical advances, which appear to be plentiful. Gamers who followed Epic's GDC appearance will be familiar with the terms "ambient occlusion" and "soft-body physics." Yes, they'll be included, as will hordes of independently animated on-screen enemies, advanced cinematic lighting and bumped-up water effects, all part of the new newest version of Unreal Engine 3.
The GI article is thin on multiplayer details, but the mag does confirm that a re-imagined version of the Gridlock map from the first game will be back. Co-op play will return and, in keeping with current trends, will allow players to drop-in and out of games dynamically. In a change from Gears of War, the sequel will allow each player to choose different difficulty levels in a co-op game, and those choices will affect each player's experience when the team splits up.
Gears 2 will also add a difficulty level at the low end of the scale that promises to make the sequel even more approachable for casual gamers, but the higher difficulty settings will remain "truly devastating," GI says.
We still don't know much about the sequel's storyline, which Epic promises will be more fleshed-out that its predecessor, which had something to do with Emergence Day, some dudes with guns and emulsion.
Delta Squad is split up when the sequel opens, and at least four new characters will be introduced as the story unfolds. Tai Kaliso is described as a spiritual warrior; Chairman Prescott is Hoffman's dictatorial boss; Dizzy is a Stranded soldier/truck driver; and Maria Santiago is the wife of Marcus Fenix's partner Dom, who embarks on a personal mission to save her in Gears of War 2.
The forced walking scenes that masked load times in the first game have also been replaced with a new system that is apparently more bearable than watching Marcus walk around with his finger in his ear while grunting at the disembodied voice of Anya. She'll play more of a role in the sequel, too, finally getting her face in the action as an image on a video screen.
There's still a lot we don't know about Gears of War 2. Will we fight the Locust Queen? Will the active-reload downing mechanism of the Longshot rifle return? Will multiplayer remain basically the same, or will Epic go for a wildly different setup? So far, CliffyB and crew aren't doling out those details. From Microsoft says no Blu-ray for Xbox 360 The comments by Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, poured cold water on recent speculation that Microsoft could support Blu-ray after Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research), backer of the rival HD DVD format, gave up when key movie studios and retailers abandoned the technology.
"Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience," Greenberg told Reuters in an interview.
Microsoft, which has stopped making an HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360, would continue to invest in its Xbox Live online service that already lets users rent hundreds of movies, including ones in high-definition.
"We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content," Greenberg said.
The software giant also expected that supply problems for the Xbox 360 meant the machine was outsold in the U.S. market by Sony's PlayStation 3 console in February for the second month in a row.
"We definitely expect we will trail in February as a result of our supply constraints," Greenberg said, adding: "By April, we will be in a very healthy inventory situation."
That would be in time for the April 29 launch of Take-Two Interactive Software Inc's (TTWO.O: Quote, Profile, Research) "Grand Theft Auto 4" game, which is widely expected to be one of the best-selling titles of 2008 and could drive purchases of the Xbox 360 and PS3. Manuel Suazo Azcona has emerged as the leader of a new rebel movement in El Salvador. Azcona’s plan seems to be an attempt to destabilize the governments of both El Salvador and neighboring Honduras. Once their respective governments are weakened, he will incite the people to try and overthrow both countries’ U.S.-backed leaders. The Ghosts are being sent in to quell this uprising before it starts. They must first stop the rebel incursions over the two nations’ shared border and then hunt down the rebel leaders one by one. If they fail, America’s efforts in the region could be set back by decades.
Caves – (Ghost Recon): Azcona’s squads are using the nearby caves as an operational base for raiding army convoys across the river. Detain and extract the rebel leader and recon the area for any hidden weapon caches. Railroad Bridge – (Ghost Recon): Intel reports the rebels are moving on a command post 60 clicks southeast of here. Protect the command post, recon the local rail line and hunt down the informant providing intel to the rebels. Battlefield – (Ghost Recon): The last rebel unit in the area is holed up in the village of Venta. An allied armor unit on the edge of town is pinned down by artillery. Ghosts, knock out the enemy comm transmitter, then escort the armor through the village. Plantation – (Ghost Recon®: Island Thunder): Intel shows a rebel leader’s motorcade is moving through the farms south of here. Take out his convoy and destroy all of the surrounding ADATS before Sabre Seven arrives for extraction. Swamp Airfield – (Ghost Recon: Island Thunder): Azcona’s rebels have occupied a small island airfield. Recon the area for intel on this operation and destroy all aircraft to prevent any means of escape. The landing strip is targeted for an air strike so get out ASAP.
