Wanderlei Silva UFC 110 Countdown Behind the Scenes
Chael Sonnen likes to talk Smack, especially about Anderson Silva Chael Sonnen spoke to MMAWeekly Radio recently where he unloaded on Silva and his manager, Ed Soares:
"I would imagine, who knows what Anderson's doing. At the end of the day, who cares," said Sonnen. "If he wants to leave the division, leave the sport, who cares. Beat it, nobody tunes in to watch him anyways, and his little fake 'I don't speak English.
"You want me to let you in on a secret, Anderson Silva speaks perfect English. He just has such a low amount of respect for you and all the rest of the media that he pretends he doesn't. I've had conversations with Anderson Silva in perfect English, and on top of that he's so boring to listen to that he and his rocket scientist manager, Ed Soares, who is also about as exciting as watching grass grow, have decided that Ed is better on the mic than Anderson, so just let Ed do the talking."
And some more:
"That guy's no more the top fighter out there than Bigfoot is roaming the woods," said Sonnen. "That is an absolute myth, and all these guys can buy into it, but there's a young man out in Portland, Ore., that is not signing up on that bandwagon. If Anderson ever signed to fight me, which is highly unlikely, he'll be getting a verbal beating like you've never seen. And his language barrier won't be the point of interest."
Not that Sonnen isn’t a decent fighter but when you have lost SEVEN fights since the last time Anderson Silva had a legit loss. Doesn’t that come to mind when you start talking shit? Hopefully Sonnen can survive his match-up against Nate Marquardt at UFC 109 so we can what he does in the cage against Silva.
Sarah Kaufman to Battle Takayo Hashi for First Strikeforce Women's 135 Pound Title
World championship mixed martial arts promotion Strikeforce will return to its roots when it brings its Challengers fight series to The Civic Auditorium in San Jose, California on Friday, February 26th. Topping the card will be a middleweight contest between wrestling powerhouse Trevor Prangley (22-5) and Karl Amoussou (11-2-1).
Undefeated power puncher Sarah Kaufman (10-0) will challenge Japan's Takayo Hashi (12-1) in the first Strikeforce women's world bantamweight championship matchup in history while Luke Rockhold (6-1), one of MMA's brightest up and comers, will take on Paul Bradley (12-1) at middleweight.
In other action, James Terry (7-1) of San Jose will square off with Tarec Saffiedine (7-2) of Temecula, California in a welterweight bout while Raul Castillo (6-0) of Half Moon Bay, California will face fellow unbeaten middleweight Yancy Medeiros (4-0) of Waianae, Hawaii.
Brock Lesnar – The Champion Returns Brock Lesnar is ready to start training immediately and will fight the winner of Shane Carwin and Frank Mir. According to Dana White, if something happens to Mir or Carwin in that fight, the winner of Nogueira vs. Velasquez will get a shot. The Champion stated on ESPN that he was suffering for almost a year with stomach pains and didn’t know what it was. During his training camp for the Shane Carwin fight everything snowballed and fell apart. He was missing full weeks of training camps. Brock was diagnosed with diverticulosis, not diverticulitis, which is the more minor case. One of his diverticuli ruptured, creating a hole in his stomach lining. His body couldn’t eat enough food to get nutrients, so he was operating at 60-80%. Here is Brock’s appearance on ESPN:
Florian vs. Gomi to Headline UFC Fight Night 21 According to MMAmania.com, former Pride FC lightweight champion and Japanese fighting deity Takanori Gomi (31-5) will jump right into the 155-pound title hunt when he makes his Octagon debut against perennial lightweight contender Kenny Florian (12-4) at UFC Fight Night 21 on March 31 in North Carolina. ESPN's "MMA Live" was the first to rumor the bout as the main event that evening on Tobacco Road.
Carey Vanier Signs Contract with Bellator FC
The lightweight division of Bellator Fighting Championships’ upcoming Season 2 tournament continued to take shape today with the addition of Carey Vanier, a former All-American wrestler and student of prominent MMA coach Greg Jackson. Vanier boasts a solid overall professional record of 7-2 (all but one of his wins have come via TKO or submission), but his career has taken on an entirely new trajectory since he began training at Jackson’s Submission Fighting school in Albuquerque, N.M. "That’s when it all started to come together for me," Vanier said. "To work with a world-renowned trainer like Greg and to train alongside guys like Keith Jardine and Donald Cerone, it just elevates your game. Over the past few months, I’ve started to realize that I’m getting pretty close to their level, which gives me a lot of confidence going into the Bellator tournament. Now I have my sights set on shocking the world and taking home that belt." PDG STAFF: 01/18/10 Rafael Cordeiro Warns: "This is going to be the return of Mr. Pride"
Wanderlei Silva has been training to go back to the origins of his aggressiveness and blood eyes, the features that made him known as the Axe Murderer, or Mr. Pride if you please. And to make it real, he started off the preparation for the upcoming fight with Michael Bisping at UFC 110 with former coach Rafael Cordeiro.
Cordeiro is the responsible for MMA at Affliction Fight Center and also manages his own academy KINGS MMA in Huntington Beach, USA. Recognized as one of the best trainers in the world, Master Rafael has worked with a new generation of fighters and sharpening Silva, “the man of the adrenaline” as he says.
“I believe the years of war inside the ring made Wanderlei know all the pathway of the adrenaline. Today, we drive this ancient and efficient style for what he does better, that is being himself inside the ring, and more important, do what made him the icon of the martial arts” Cordeiro explained to InTheGuard.com.
“I believe this is going to be the return of the Mr. Pride. The work has been done for this reason and nothing will change its direction. Many technique sessions, much information, a lot of attacks and defenses not only in Muay Thai, but regarding everything that can happen when mixed up in a fight; I’m very happy with this camp because we’re stressing specific workouts without forgetting his cardio. But I repeat, the priority is the technique with 100% of cardio put in the sparring sessions, where I can active Wanderlei” added the coach.
Wanderlei Silva and Michael Bisping co-headline UFC 110, on Feb 21th, at the Acer Arena that takes place for the first time in Sydney, Australia. The main card will be headlined by heavyweight stars Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez.
WEC Confirms Opponents for Pulver and Torres
Two legendary names in the world of mixed martial arts return on Saturday, March 6 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio in what is shaping up to be one of the deepest World Extreme Cagefighting® cards ever. WEC General Manager Reed Harris confirmed today that former bantamweight champion Miguel Angel Torres (36-2) will face top-ranked contender Joseph Benavidez (11-1), while former UFC® lightweight champion and featherweight star Jens Pulver (22-12-1) begins his trek back to the top with a bout against seasoned veteran Javier Vazquez (13-3).
“Joseph Benavidez and Miguel Torres both want a shot at the winner of the Brian Bowles-Dominick Cruz title fight,” Harris said. “So we expect these two to leave it all in the cage when they collide in Columbus on March 6. The same goes for Jens and Javier. Both guys are well-respected in this sport and both guys want to prove that they have what it takes to win the featherweight championship. It’s going to be a tremendous night.”
A winner of 17 out of his last 18 fights, former bantamweight champion Miguel Angel Torres is on a mission to reclaim the world title. Owning wins over the likes of Chase Beebe, Manny Tapia, and Takeya Mizugaki in his stellar career, the 28-year-old Gracie Jiu Jitsu black belt plans to make a statement when he faces Benavidez in Columbus.
“I can’t wait to get back in the cage and show what I can do,” Torres, a native of East Chicago, Ind., said. “Benavidez is probably the top contender at 135 right now and I want to prove that I’m still the best in this division. I want to earn my way back to the belt.”
Fresh off a devastating knockout win over Rani Yahya in December, Joseph Benavidez looks to continue his impressive rise in the bantamweight division with a win over Torres. The 25-year-old, who trains alongside WEC stars Urijah Faber and Danny Castillo in Sacramento, Calif., knew that he and Torres would cross paths at some point and is eager to lock horns with the former belt holder.
“I have envisioned us fighting for a long time,” Benavidez, who owns notable victories of Yahya, Jeff Curran, and Danny Martinez since joining WEC, said. “I think fans are in for one of the best fights of the year. I think I’m capable of beating him. I’m really looking forward to proving myself against someone people have considered a legend and the best in the world.”
From BJ Penn to Takanori Gomi and Caol Uno, Jens Pulver has traded leather with some of the best lighter weight fighters of all-time. Universally known for his powerful left hand and strong wrestling, the 35-year-old Midwest native feels rejuvenated heading into his March 6 fight against Vazquez. With that said, “Lil’ Evil” hopes to begin another run toward a world title when he steps inside the cage to meet “Showtime” in Ohio.
“I’m pretty jacked to be fighting in the Midwest,” Pulver, who began his career training in Bettendorf, Iowa, said. “I’m ready to go in there and show people that I’m not done. Javier is always tough, so I’m excited to fight a guy like him.”
Calling it the biggest fight of his career, 16-fight veteran Javier Vazquez did not hesitate one bit when WEC officials offered him a bout against Pulver. A Gracie Jiu Jitsu black belt who has been fighting professionally since 1998, Vazquez has long sought a fight with Pulver. Understanding Pulver’s iconic status in the sport, Vazquez looks to propel himself into immediate title contention with a win over the crafty southpaw.
“I wanted this fight seven or eight years ago,” Vazquez said. “So I’m really excited that the opportunity is finally here. He is such a big name in this sport and I respect him a lot. I’m glad this fight is happening because it could prove to be a turning point in my career.”

Bellator Adds GSP Protege Mike Ricci
Undefeated Canadian lightweight Mike Ricci, a regular training partner to fellow Quebec native Georges St-Pierre, is the latest highly-touted MMA prospect to sign an exclusive contract with Bellator Fighting Championships, the promotion has announced.
The 23-year-old Ricci, who will enter Bellator’s 155 lbs. tournament with an unblemished pro record of 5-0, trains alongside GSP under the famed Firas Zahabi at his TriStar gym in Montreal. Zahabi told Bellator on Sunday that he thinks Ricci is “the next big thing” to come out of Canada.
Bob Shamrock Dead at 68
Bob Shamrock, father to Ken and Frank Shamrock, died Thursday from longtime complications of Diabetes. Shamrock was 68 years old.
Shamrock was a guiding light in the lives of the future mixed martial arts legends, and welcomed both Ken and Frank into his “Shamrock Boys Home” in Susanville, Calif., a haven for delinquent youth.
Ken Wayne Nance came to Shamrock’s home at the age of 13.
"I just watched Ken's eyes when he first arrived, because this was my home,” Bob Shamrock was quoted in a press release. “It wasn't some business place where I came on from 8 till 5 -- it was my home, and the house was really big, we ate well, we had a swimming pool, and all those kinds of things. It was a lot different than the other group homes he had been in."
Ken flourished at the Shamrock home, which encouraged the boys to compete in a variety of sports. Shamrock settled disputes between the teenagers in backyard boxing matches under his supervision.
In February 1982, Bob legally adopted Ken, who changed his last name to Shamrock. Later, Frank also assumed the surname to recognize Bob’s positive influence in his life.
Bob attended multiple MMA events to support Ken and Frank’s burgeoning careers in the U.S. and Japan in the 1990s. Shamrock assisted other fighters as well. Future UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver traveled from Iowa to Lockeford, Calif., to join the patriarch’s “Shamrock 2000” team.
Ken Shamrock said his father had a way with all who crossed his path.
“My dad had an unbelievable light with these kids -- I’ve never seen anybody able to take a defiant kid into their home, and handle them like my father could -- willing to get into a fight with them if he had to because of disrespect and then turn around and hug them and let them know, the minute you give me respect -- I’ll give you respect,” said Shamrock. “Everyone that came in contact with my dad --you could tell he made a difference in their life. I’ve never seen anyone have that much success with kids. I’ll miss him and I’m forever thankful.” R.I.P.

Lauzon Eyes UFC Return in Boston Despite losing a decision January 2 to Sam Stout, popular lightweight Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon hopes that his next fight will be this August in UFC’s debut in Boston.
Lauzon, a native of E. Bridgewater (MA), would certainly be a hometown favorite fighting at the Boston Garden. “We’ll see how it goes but I certainly want to fight at home in Boston,” Lauzon said. “I’d like to fight before that, where my fight against Stout was my first in 10 months, but not if it risks fighting in Boston this August.”
Sidelined for 10 months after undergoing knee surgery to repair his ACL, Lauzon re-entered the Octagon against Stout in Las Vegas, participating in the UFC 108 Pay-per-view “Fight of the Night.”
“I’m obviously disappointed in the result,” the star of The Ultimate Fighter 5 television reality show said. “It was an entertaining fight, but that’s not what I want to be known for. I focused on the health of my knee and it held up. I didn’t concentrate on my overall condition and I was a little rusty. I trained like a maniac six days of the week, twice a day, and then I couldn’t do too much for six months (due to his knee surgery).
“I definitely thought I had Stout in the first round but he had other plans. I felt his shoulder pop and I really thought that I had him. I guess it wasn’t meant to be. I expected him to be tough. His takedown defense was better than I thought. I thought I’d have an easier time on the ground, too. He came to fight with a perfect game plan. Give him credit for a good fight. I’d like to fight him in a rematch but, then again, I’d like to fight anybody I’ve lost to but that doesn’t happen very often and is out of my control.”
The 25-year-old from Massachusetts, who has a computer networking degree from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, came out of his fight against Stout a little sore and sporting a black eye. He’s already back training at his gym, Lauzon MMA in Bridgewater.
“I really want to fight on the first UFC show in Boston,” Lauzon concluded. “It’s a natural and would be a dream come true for me.”

UFC 111 – Mir vs. Carwin and Hardy vs. GSP
Two world titles will be on the line for the first time in 2010 when the Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey for UFC 111: ST-PIERRE vs. HARDY, Saturday, March 27th, live on Pay-Per-View and presented by TapouT. In featured bouts, one of the best fighters in the game today, UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, looks to extend his reign and his six fight winning streak against British bomber Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy, and former heavyweight champion Frank Mir looks to become only the second man in UFC history to win the championship three times when he takes on number one contender Shane Carwin for the interim UFC heavyweight title.
“UFC 111 will see our first two title fights of 2010, and they’re both incredible matchups,” said UFC President Dana White. “Georges St-Pierre is pound for pound one of the very best fighters in the world and has been dominant as welterweight champion, but Dan Hardy has the punching power and the confidence to score an upset on March 27th. And I can’t say enough about a fight that has undefeated powerhouse wrestler Shane Carwin taking on former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir for the interim belt. This fight pits Carwin’s one punch KO power versus Mir’s fight-ending submission game. Both of these matches are ‘can’t miss’ fights in terms of action.”
